Administration of the graduate program.

The graduate program is under the direct supervision of the entire primary faculty of the department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. The department appoints a program director who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the graduate program. The director is assisted in this job by the following three committees.

The specific responsibilities of the committees are:

  1. Admissions and Recruitment Committee: This committee handles the recruitment and admission of graduate students to the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
  2. Curriculum Committee: This committee is responsible for developing the core graduate curriculum that is offered to the graduate students. It periodically reviews the courses offered by the department to ensure that they incorporate the most recent advances in biochemistry and molecular biology.
  3. Operating Committee: This committee serves to advise and mentor students prior to their selection of a thesis mentor and to provide assistance as needed. All incoming students will be advised by the Operating Committee. The committee will help the students to plan coursework and also advise them in the choice of a research laboratory rotation (see below). The first laboratory rotation for the student will be determined by the operating committee whereas later rotations will be chosen by the student. Although members of the operating committee will have major responsibility for the student, students are encouraged to seek advice from any and all faculty members. This committee is also responsible for administering the written qualifying (comprehensive) examination.

Student Leave Policy

This statement applies to full time PhD students in good academic standing at the University of Miami Miller
School of Medicine (UMMSOM) . In general, trainees may receive stipends during the normal holiday periods
observed by UMMSOM. In addition, PhD students may receive stipend support for up to 15 calendar days of
sick leave per year. Sick leave may be used for the medical conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth.
PhD students may also receive stipends for up to 30 calendar days of parental leave per year for the adoption
or birth of a child, if the parental leave is requested from and approved by the program director. Individuals
requiring periods of time away from their research training experience longer than specified here must seek
approval from their program director for an unpaid leave of absence.  At the beginning of a leave of absence,
the trainee must submit a written request which includes the reason for the request as well as the date the
leave will begin and end. This request, once approved by the Program Director, should be submitted to the
Office of Graduate Studies which will seek the necessary approval from the Dean of The Graduate School.
