MIAMI AND SOUTH FLORIDA

The single most important factor in selecting a graduate program is how well the program meets the educational needs of the student; however, the quality of life outside the laboratory is also important. Recreational and cultural activities play a crucial role in balancing the stress inherent in any training program.

Truly one of the world's most exciting cities, Miami provides a sophisticated and multi-cultural environment in which to live. The Miami Opera, the New World Symphony, the Miami Film Festival, and the Miami City Ballet are just a few of the extensive variety of cultural activities in the area. Museums, theater, art galleries, music festivals and other events help round out the cultural activities that abound in a large metropolitan setting. Unique to Miami, though, are ethnic events such as the Goombay and Calle Ocho Festivals, which are the spice of the city's international flavor. In addition, Miami has several historic neighborhoods, including the Art Deco District in Miami Beach and the Coconut Grove area, noted for its nightlife.

Miami's subtropical climate allows enjoyment of nature, sports, the water, and outdoor life year-round. Nearby are the Everglades National Park, a unique ecosystem; the John Pennekamp State Park, the only living coral reef in the United States; the Florida Keys; and the remote beaches of Florida's West coast. Jogging and bicycling trails run through the city. Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beckon sailors, swimmers, and water sports enthusiasts year-round. Spectator sports abound. The University of Miami boasts the well-known Hurricanes football team and the nationally ranked Hurricanes baseball team. Professional spectator sports include Miami Heat basketball, Miami Dolphins football, Florida Marlins baseball, Florida Panthers ice hockey, and numerous other events.
