Student Poster Presentation at Departmental Retreat

 

Student Awards

The department awards its graduate students by giving out several prizes every year. Most of these prizes are awarded during the Departmental Retreat in May or early June.

 

Margaret Whelan Poster Awards

ELIGIBILITY: Graduate students in Biochemistry presenting posters at the departmental retreat ion June 2, 2006. There will be two awards totaling $500, one given to students who are in year 1 to 3 of their graduate studies, and the other for more senior students.

 Posters will be voted on by the participants at the departmental retreat.

 

Betty Schultz Prizes

for best oral presentations 

ELIGIBILITY:

           Graduate students in Biochemistry. There are two prizes of $500 each, one for the best oral presentation at the departmental retreat, the other for the best 601 Journal Club presentation during the academic year 2005/2006. The presentations at the retreat will be judged by all participants, the 601 prize will be determined by votes of the Biochemistry faculty collected during the academic year.

 

Leroy Dietrich Prize
for the best comprehensive exam

The student with the best score in the comprehensive exam. The prize is $500. This prize will only be awarded in years where a student achieves an outstanding score.

JOHN M. MARSH MEMORIAL
 
RESEARCH PRIZES

 IN

 BIOCHEMISTRY

ELIGIBILITY: Graduate students of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are eligible to apply for the John M. Marsh Memorial Research Prizes.

            Applicants with demonstrated academic and research accomplishments or with the potential to excel in research should submit a letter (not to exceed 3 pages) describing their previous research achievements or future research plans.  Applicants should also describe the intended use of the Research Prize ($1,000) and how receipt of the award will further the applicant's research endeavors. There are 2 prizes being awarded every year.

            Applications will be reviewed by a committee of three faculty members of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. A typical application should cover the following areas: 1. Student's scientific progress (publications), 2. why do you think your work is important, 3. What goals do you have for a career in science and 4. how does this prize help you in achieving your goals. There might be other things that you consider important for the judges.

Deadline: June 1, 2007

Three copies of the application should be submitted to Rudolf Werner, room 303, Gautier.

Awards will be presented at the RESEARCH RETREAT scheduled for June 8, 2007.

NANCY L. NOBLE 

TRAVEL PRIZE

IN

BIOCHEMISTRY

ELIGIBILITY: Graduate students are eligible to apply for the Nancy L. Noble travel award.  It consists of one award of $1,000, designed to defray expenses to attend a scientific meeting (e.g., ASBMB annual meeting, Gordon conferences, etc.).

            Graduate students should should explain what meeting they want to attend and whether they plan to give a poster or an oral presentation. Please ask your mentor to submit a letter in support of your application.

            Applications will be reviewed by three faculty members of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. 

Deadline: June 1, 2007

            Awards will be presented at the RESEARCH RETREAT scheduled for June 8,  2007.

 

 

Diamond Fellowship
for the best Grade Point Average obtained during the first year of graduate school

The first-year student with the best GPA will be awarded the Diamond Fellowship, which consists of a $1,000 check.
