The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (BMB) is dedicated to
excellence in basic research and teaching. With the arrival of our new chairman,
Dr. Murray Deutscher, in 1996 we have hired 12 new faculty members. The total
number of primary faculty is now 22. In addition to these primary members of our
faculty we have several faculty members from both other basic science and
clinical departments, who have secondary appointments. These secondary faculty
participate in teaching and mentoring Ph.D. students, giving our students a wide
choice of choosing a research topic for their thesis.
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are an important part of our research
activities. We normally admit about 8 new graduate students every year leading
to a steady-state student population of close to 40. We also have about 15
postdoctoral fellows. The department is housed on the first 5 floors of the Gautier Building, which is surrounded by the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, the Diabetes Research Institute, the Batchelor Genetics Research Building and the Lois Pope Life Science Building (Miami Project). Its central location allows for easy collaboration between our professors and members of the other basic science and clinical departments. The Department of Biochemistry also houses the DNA Core Lab (DNA sequencing and synthesis) and the Protein Analysis Facility (peptide analysis, peptide synthesis and mass spectroscopy). These two facilities provides service to the entire university. The Gautier building is a part of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. It is one of largest medical complexes in the United States and is located at the Civic Center, about 3 miles from downtown Miami. The medical campus is linked to the Coral Gables campus by the Metrorail transit system. The train ride between the two campuses takes about 15 minutes. The University of Miami School of Medicine was established in 1952 and has undergone unparalleled growth as a major center for academic learning and scientific research. The UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center ranks among the top 25 U.S. medical schools in research funding. It includes several allied research institutions: The William L. McKnight Vision Research Institute of Bascom-Palmer, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the Parkinson Research Institute, the Diabetes Research Institute, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Research Center, the Mailman Child Development Center, and the VA Medical Center, making the School of Medicine one of the country's premier research and medical institutions. |
